DECLARING THE CITY’S INTENT TO COLLABORATE WITH BERNALILLO COUNTY TO REVITALIZE SUNSET ROAD AND ISLETA BOULEVARD, FROM CENTRAL AVENUE TO ISLETA PUEBLO.

WHEREAS, Sunset Road and Isleta Boulevard have provided an important north-south connection through the South Valley for many generations, first as El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro, and later as section of Route 66; and

WHEREAS, El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro connected Santa Fe to Mexico City for over 300 years; and

                     WHEREAS, El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro is a designated national historic trail by the National Park Service; and

WHEREAS, El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro comprises 22 miles of historic alignment in the North and South Valleys, on the east and west sides of the Rio Grande, as it passes through Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque; and

WHEREAS, the trail plan for El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail plan was adopted by Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque (R-22-50) in 2022; and

WHEREAS, the trail plan identified capital projects to connect streets and multi-use trails to public sites, with amenities and interpretation, such as parks, schools, and community centers along the alignment, and laid the groundwork for communities along the trail to tell their own stories; and

WHEREAS, the portion of El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro that runs from Central Avenue to Isleta Pueblo on the west side of the Rio Grande runs through the South Valley; and

WHEREAS, Route 66 was established in 1926, and from 1926 to 1937 ran north-south through the Albuquerque area; and

WHEREAS, the north-south alignment through the South Valley ran along Isleta Boulevard from Bridge Boulevard to Isleta Pueblo; and

WHEREAS, Albuquerque will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Route 66 in 2026; and

WHEREAS, structures and signage from the Route 66 era remain along Isleta Boulevard; and

WHEREAS the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County propose to work together to revitalize this section of  El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro and Route 66.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

SECTION 1. The City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County shall work together to revitalize El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro and Route 66 from Central Avenue to Isleta Pueblo.  Work on revitalization shall include but not be limited to, an inventory of existing historic structures, including signs, identification of opportunities along the roadway, infrastructure needs, wayfinding and lighting, and incorporation of trail improvements identified in the El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail plan. The alignment is as follows:

                     The Central Avenue SW and Sunset Road SW intersection

                     Sunset Road SW to Bridge Boulevard SW

                     Bridge Boulevard SW to Isleta Boulevard SW

                     Bridge Boulevard SW and Isleta Boulevard SW intersection

                     Isleta Boulevard SW to I-25 intersection with Tribal Road 663.
