APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE FILING OF A GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE ROUTE 66 CORRIDOR PRESERVATION PROGRAM, FOR FISCAL YEAR 2023 THROUGH FISCAL YEAR 2024.

WHEREAS, in recognition of the significance of Route 66 to America’s heritage, Congress passed an act in 1999 to create the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, which is administered by the National Park Service; and

WHEREAS, first funded in 2001, this program collaborates with private, nonprofit, and government partners to identify, prioritize and address priority preservation needs of Route 66, including planning, research and education initiatives related to the preservation of Route 66, in order to preserve and commemorate the special places and stories of this important era of American history; and

WHEREAS, in 2026, the nation will be celebrating the Route 66 Centennial -- the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road serving the traveling public; and

WHEREAS, Route 66 was one of the United States' first continuous stretches of paved highway, and served as a major path for those who migrated west; and

WHEREAS, the stretch of Route 66 that runs through Albuquerque on Central Ave. is the longest urban stretch of the historic highway along the entire Mother Road in the country; and

WHEREAS, Route 66 has been a critical driver of small business development and job creation and includes some of Albuquerque’s most prominent arts and culture attractions; and

WHEREAS, the Route 66 Centennial Commission Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President on December 23, 2020 to create a commission that will recommend activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of U.S. Route 66 in 2026; and will consist of representatives from each of the eight Route 66 states who will recommend the production of various written materials, films and documentaries to commemorate the history of Route 66; and

WHEREAS, The Centennial Anniversary Celebration is a great opportunity for the City of Albuquerque to showcase the value of promoting Albuquerque’s stretch of Route 66 as it is tied to the unique cultural heritage of our City; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service has issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity dedicated to preserving the special places and stories of the historic highway; and 

                     WHEREAS, the City desires to appropriate these funds and City funds in the amount of $30,000 from the Operating Grants Fund 265 for the purpose of creating an educational program dedicated to the preservation of the history and cultural heritage of Route 66.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF

ALBUQUERQUE:

                     Section 1. That the application for funds with the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service in the amount of $30,000 is hereby approved, and its acceptance and filing with the appropriate official or office is in all respects approved.

                     Section 2. That upon award, funds in the amount of $30,000 in federal funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service is hereby appropriated to the Department of Arts and Culture in the Operating Grant Fund 265 for Fiscal Year 2023.

      Section 3. That in the event this grant is received, upon execution of an agreement of the parties, the amounts indicated above will be adjusted to reflect actual Federal participation.
