Making Appropriations To The Fire Department In Fiscal Year 2017 To Provide For A Rescue Unit At Fire Station 4 (Benton)

MAKING APPROPRIATIONS TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IN FISCAL YEAR 2017 TO PROVIDE FOR A RESCUE UNIT AT FIRE STATION 4.
WHEREAS, in 2013 the existing Rescue Unit at Fire Station 4 was transferred to Fire Station 17 to serve EMS need on the west side of the City; and
WHEREAS, due to demographic changes and population increase in these areas, there is an increasing need for EMS services in the Downtown and North Valley corridors; and
WHEREAS, homeless and behavioral health service locations are increasing in the immediate area of Station 4; and
WHEREAS, Rescue 4 would provide backup for the heavily-burdened Rescue 1; and
WHEREAS, Station 4 is uniquely located to provide rescue services on the interstate highways; and
WHEREAS, only one other station in the city, Station 10, also in the North Valley, does not have a Rescue Unit; and
WHEREAS, the Fiscal Year 2017 Public Safety Goal, Objective 13 required that the Rescue 4 unit be put into operation by the end of calendar year 2016, with two (2) Paramedics on the new vehicle; and
WHEREAS, the Fire Department expects delivery of the rescue apparatus vehicle designated for Fire Station 4 in January 2017, and will need additional time to staff and equip the unit; and
WHEREAS, the appropriation of additional funds for start-up and operation of the Rescue 4 unit is timely and necessary for the City to serve its citizens.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:
Section 1. That the Administration is hereby directed to implement the operation of a Rescue Unit at Fire Station 4 beginning April 1, 2017 using existing General Fund appropriations for Fiscal Year 2017.
