RECOGNIZING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HISTORIC SITE ADJACENT TO THE SINGING ARROW COMMUNITY CENTER, KNOWN AS RANCHO DE CARNUÉ, IN ORDER TO RECOGNIZE AND PRESERVE THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SITE, AND DESIGNATE IT WORTHY OF ADDITIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS, PRESERVATION, AND INTERPRETATION; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE OPEN SPACE DIVISION OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT.
WHEREAS, settlement of the Tijeras Canyon area is of great historical importance to the history of Albuquerque and surrounding traditional communities such as the Cañón de Carnué land grant and Isleta Pueblo; and
WHEREAS, evidence of this settlement is found in numerous archaeological and historic sites along the Tijeras Arroyo; and
WHEREAS, the archaeological site of Rancho de Carnué was donated to the City of Albuquerque for the preservation and protection of its land and location; and
WHEREAS, archaeological investigations conducted at Rancho de Carnué were done over 35 years ago and since then the site adjacent to the Singing Arrow community has been protected but undeveloped; and
WHEREAS, new techniques are available to re-examine the site so that more of the site area can be used for interpretation, education, and more active public access; and
WHEREAS, such investigation and site re-design will enhance the site's historic character and quality of life for all of the City's residents.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:
      Section 1. That the archaeological site adjacent to the Singing Arrow Community Center, known as Rancho de Carnué, is both historically and culturally important to the community, and to designate the site worthy of additional archeological investigations, preservation, and redevelopment for the citizens of Albuquerque.
      Section 2. That up to Seventy Five Thousand Dollars ($75,000) is hereby designated within the City Council Projects activity for the purpose of funding archeological investigations, interpretation, site design, and related activities of Rancho de Carnué adjacent to the Singing Arrow Community.
