RENAMING THE EXISTING CATCH AND RELEASE POND AT TINGLEY BEACH AS THE BOB GERDING CATCH AND RELEASE POND IN HONOR OF BOB GERDING'S DISTINGUISHED LEGACY AS A FISHING AND OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST AND AMBASSADOR, AND IN PARTICULAR AS A STEWARD AND ADVOCATE FOR FISHING AT TINGLEY BEACH.
WHEREAS, the Catch and Release Pond at Tingley Beach is a community fishing pond located within the Albuquerque BioPark; and
WHEREAS, the Catch and Release Pond is the southern-most pond at Tingley Beach, and designated as Special Trout Water for catch and release only; and
WHEREAS, Bob Gerding was part of a "Citizens Task Force," together with local radio personality TJ Trout, where they advocated on behalf of and made recommendations for improvements to the Catch and Release Pond and hosted fishing derbies together; and
WHEREAS, Bob Gerding died on December 18, 2013, at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer; and
WHEREAS, during his life Bob Gerding was known as "New Mexico's Ambassador to the Outdoors," and hosted the weekly hunting and fishing program, "WILD New Mexico," which aired on KASA-TV Channel 2, and KRQE-TV, Channel 13; and
WHEREAS, Bob Gerding's weekly fishing reports and tips were part of the 94-Rock morning radio program for years when it was hosted by T.J. Trout and he wrote books on fly tying and fly fishing and taught clinics on those topics; and
WHEREAS, for 15 years he produced Bob Gerding's Outdoor Adventures Hunting & Fishing Show, a three day extravaganza each February at Expo New Mexico that drew hunting and fishing vendors, outfitters and lodge representatives from as far away as Australia and South Africa; and
WHEREAS, Bob Gerding was widely known for his easy-going personality, patience, and modesty, and his goal was to make people aware of all of the outdoor activities available in New Mexico.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:
Section 1. The existing Catch and Release Pond at Tingley Beach shall be renamed the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond in honor of his long and distinguished legacy as a fishing and outdoor enthusiast and ambassador, and in particular as a steward and advocate for fishing at Tingley Beach.
Section 2. The City of Albuquerque Cultural Services Department is hereby directed to sign the pond as the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond and to amend, as quickly as is reasonable, applicable City maps or lists to reflect the name change.
