EXPANDING THE SCOPE OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION OPEN SPACE LAND ACQUISITION PROJECT TO INCLUDE THE ACQUISITION OF APPROXIMATELY FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY ACRES OF LAND ADJACENT TO THE CITY'S EXISTING GUTIERREZ CANYON OPEN SPACE IN THE EAST MOUNTAINS FOR USE AS OPEN SPACE.
WHEREAS, the City's Open Space program manages open space to conserve natural and archaeological resources, protect wildlife habitat, provide opportunities for outdoor education, provide a place for recreation, and define the edges of the urban environment; and
WHEREAS, an approximately 420-acre parcel of land in the East Mountains is available for acquisition by the City, and that parcel provides abundant opportunities for the public to view a wide variety of wildlife including deer, bears and mountain lions; and
WHEREAS, the 420-acre parcel of land is located adjacent to the City's existing Gutierrez Canyon Open Space and will improve access to that open space off of New Mexico Highway 14 as well as provide a possible new trailhead in Gutierrez Canyon; and
WHEREAS, the State during the 2007 Legislative Session allocated $1.25 million in funding for the project, and the State Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department has committed an additional $250 thousand; and
WHEREAS, the Trust for Public Land has an option on the property and will purchase the property for $2 million and deed it to the City of Albuquerque for use as open space; and
