Supporting Efforts To Provide A Drag Racing Facility For Albuquerque Drag Racing Enthusiasts; Urging The New Mexico State Land Commissioner To Allow The Re-Opening Of The Drag Facility Located In Mesa Del Sol.

                     WHEREAS, drag racing has been a popular sports activity in Albuquerque for over 35 years; and

                     WHEREAS, many Albuquerque businesses have relied on drag racing for a significant portion of sales; and

                     WHEREAS,                     sanctioned and organized drag racing is a safer activity than cruising and racing on city streets; and

                     WHEREAS, the existence of a drag racing facility at Mesa del Sol in the past has provided an alternative to cruising and racing on city streets; and

                     WHEREAS, the drag racing facility at Mesa del Sol was closed in December, 2000 in anticipation of nearby development activity; and

WHEREAS, no other drag racing facility is presently available in the Albuquerque area; and

                     WHEREAS, no development activity has yet occurred near the Mesa del Sol drag racing facility.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

                     Section 1.  That the City Council endorses efforts to provide a drag racing facility in the Albuquerque area as an alternative to cruising and racing on city streets.

                     Section 2.  That the City Council urges the State Land Commissioner to execute a lease to allow for the re-opening of the drag racing facility at Mesa del Sol until such time as any development activity precludes its use.
