Changing The Name Of Eastman Crossing/Eastman Avenue To Jim Baca Avenue (Baca, by request)

WHEREAS, The City's policy on naming streets was amended in 2005 (R-205-026) to provide that the City Council may evaluate and redesignate a street name if it finds that the developer's name is not consistent with city polices and the public welfare; and
WHEREAS, James R. Baca was born September 6, 1945 is an American politician from New Mexico. A member of the Democratic Party, Baca served twice as New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands from 1983 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1993 and as 27th mayor of Albuquerque from 1997 to 2001; and
WHEREAS, Jim Baca has a strong record of visionary service to New Mexico. He retired as the State of New Mexico's Natural Resource Trustee in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Jim Baca served as Mayor of the City of Albuquerque, as well as two prior terms as New Mexico's elected State Land Commissioner. Jim Baca served as the Director of the National Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior in the first Clinton Administration; and
WHEREAS, Jim Baca also has served on the Boards of numerous nonprofit organizations including The Wilderness Society, the Wyss Foundation, and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. Baca has run a successful public affairs consulting practice when not serving in public office; and
WHEREAS, The City of Albuquerque annexed Mesa Del Sol during the time Jim Baca was the Land Commissioner and 10 years after Jim Baca first proposed a Master Community for the Mesa Del Sol Site.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:
