Approving And Authorizing A Grant Agreement From The U.S. Department Of Justice, Office Of Community Oriented Policing Services (Cops Office) And Providing An Appropriation To The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) For Fiscal Year 2025 (Peña, by request)

     WHEREAS, APD submitted a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice through its Cops Hiring Program (CHP). The grant application was approved and awarded to the City of Albuquerque in the amount of $6,250,000; and

     WHEREAS, estimated IDOH in the amount of $796,875 and estimated City match in the amount of $1,562,500 are required to support the grant; and the CHP does not allow for the reimbursement of indirect costs; and

     WHEREAS, the grant will assist APD in combatting violent crime, boost prosecution of violent actors and their organizations, and increase capacity to prosecute cases in federal court; and

     WHEREAS, the grant will pay for 100% of 50 entry level salaries and fringe benefits of newly hired and/or re-hired full-time sworn career law enforcement officers over two years, up to a maximum of $125,000 per position.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

     Section 1: That Council hereby approves and authorizes the appropriation from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) grant in the amount of $6,250,000, City matching funds requirement of $1,562,500, and indirect cost of $796,875 from the Transfer to Operating Grants Fund Program in the General Fund, are hereby appropriated to the Albuquerque Police Department in the Operating Grants Fund (265) for Fiscal Year 2025.
