Appointment of Joshua D. Boone to the position of City Attorney

Pursuant to Section 4(e) of Article 5 of the City Charter, I am submitting for Council’s advice and consent the appointment of Joshua D. Boone to the position of City Attorney.
With over twenty-two years of legal practice with an emphasis on bringing parties together to make the judicial system work, Joshua D. Boone is ready to be the Attorney for the City of Albuquerque. One of his strengths is not just to analyze all sides of a matter and come to a legal and just decision, but to bring opposing sides of those same matters together and work for the common good.
Joshua began his career with the Public Defender’s Office before opening a private practice with an emphasis in criminal law. In 2017, Joshua joined the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office, where he led the Metropolitan Division as a Deputy District Attorney. In 2023, he was named as Chief Deputy District Attorney for the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
More than simply prosecuting cases, he was allowed the opportunity to teach and mentor young attorneys in the beginning of their careers. When the opportunity arose to create a Domestic Violence Early Contact Team that attempted to intersect prosecution and families, Joshua jumped at the opportunity to learn and make all sides better.
During COVID-19, Joshua adapted the functions of the DA’s office to create a paperless system and worked with the Courts to implement new technologies that are still used today and have evolved into normal practice. He has continued to make efforts to focus not only on the accountability aspect of domestic violence abusers, but also to engage more of the individuals that have been affected and involve them as their needs require. Joshua has taken the lead in prosecution of Extreme Risk Firearm Protection Order cases and continues to seek a more treatment-based approach for cases that involve domestic abuse and how it relates to family law individuals.
Joshua’s family is originally from Mississippi and he was fortunate enough to live overseas growing up in India, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. He moved to Albuquerque after attending high school at the Fountain Valley School in Colorado. Joshua is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, and also received his BA in Political Science from the University of New Mexico.
