Adopting The El Camino Real De Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail (NHT) Development Concept Plan (DCP) (Benton)

ADOPTING THE EL CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO NATIONAL   HISTORIC TRAIL (NHT) DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT PLAN (DCP).

WHEREAS, the National Park Service designated El Camino de Tierra Adentro historic route between Mexico City and Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico a national historic trail; and

WHEREAS, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro NHT comprises 22 miles of historic alignment on both sides of the North and South Valleys as it passes through various jurisdictions within Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque; and

WHEREAS, Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, the National Park Service, and The University of New Mexico have partnered to provide a conceptual plan that outlines a vision for the development of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail within Bernalillo County; and

WHEREAS, Bernalillo County formally adopted the plan on May 24, 2022; and

WHEREAS, the trail plan provides a vision for the historic trail and recommends capital projects to connect both streets and multi-use trails to public sites, with amenities and interpretation, such as at parks, schools, and community centers along the alignment; and

WHEREAS, the trail plan lays the groundwork for projects that will allow communities along this historic trail a way to tell their own stories; and

WHEREAS, the plan outlines strategies to coordinate with existing trail efforts and to connect public and private stakeholders and agencies; and

WHEREAS, the projects identified within the plan are intended to contribute towards tourism, economic development, and cultural preservation; and

WHEREAS, there was significant interest and support for the retracement of El Camino Real NHT during the two phases of public outreach in summer 2020 and summer 2021.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

SECTION 1. The City Council hereby adopts The El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail Development Concept Plan as depicted in Exhibit A to this resolution to provide guidance on preservation and direct projects along the historic trail within the City of Albuquerque.
