Establishing a Community Based Process to Find Solutions for the La Jornada Installation.
WHEREAS, on June 16, 2020 part of the La Jornada installation, was temporarily removed as an emergency act of public safety with the written consent of the artist Reynaldo “Sonny” Rivera; and
WHEREAS, La Jornada by Rivera and Betty Sabo depicts the expedition of Spanish settlers and soldiers to New Mexico, and Numbe Whageh by Nora Naranjo Morse of Santa Clara Pueblo is a contemplative earthwork that honors a place of solace and reflection commissioned as a response to the La Jornada in 1998 (completed in 2004); and
WHEREAS, La Jornada is part of the City of Albuquerque's Public Art collection and sits on the grounds of the City’s Albuquerque Museum, a public institution dedicated to sharing "the stories of our rich heritage and many cultures”; and
WHEREAS, the City of Albuquerque’s Public Art collection is guided by the Albuquerque Arts Board; and
WHEREAS, in June 2020, the Cultural Services Department established the Race, History & Healing Project to initiate and support community-centered dialogue in response to community concern about the La Jornada installation; and
WHEREAS, the Race, History & Healing Project begins with an open invitation to all community voices and a steadfast commitment to collective solution building through facilitated meetings, public input, and discussion designed to engage as many community members as possible; and
WHEREAS, the Race, History & Healing Project will generate community-led recommendations for the La Jornada installation as well as recommendations that honor the cultural heritage and shared cultural resources of the Albuquerque community.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:
Section 1. The Administration is directed to complete a process for community input for recommendations for the La Jornada installation. Community recommendations will be presented to the Albuquerque Arts Board for review, and will then be submitted to the Albuquerque City Council for consideration.
