ADJUSTING FISCAL YEAR 2020 GENERAL FUND APPROPRIATIONS TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR A GUN BUY-BACK PROGRAM THROUGH A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN THE CITY COUNCIL, MAYOR’S OFFICE, ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND ALBUQUERQUE METRO CRIMESTOPPERS.

                     WHEREAS, the City of Albuquerque has as one of its goals to enhance local law enforcement efforts thereby providing for the public safety and welfare; and

WHEREAS, The Albuquerque Police Department, through a partnership with Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers and funding support from the City Council, has in the past few years held a series of successful gun buy-back programs that have compensated individuals for the voluntary surrender of firearms; and

WHEREAS, the gun buy-back program is intended to decrease the number of unwanted guns and engage the community towards a common goal of reducing gun violence in the community; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Keller has made fighting crime the top priority for the City and, as part of a multi-pronged effort to reduce gun violence in Albuquerque, the Administration is supporting this gun buy-back initiative to give people a safe way to dispose of unwanted firearms to take those guns out of circulation on the streets. 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

                     SECTION 1.  That the Director of Council Services is hereby directed to work in collaboration with the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers to plan, schedule and execute any related contracts for a Gun Buy-Back program to be held in the spring of 2020.

                     SECTION 2. That the following amounts are hereby adjusted in the following  programs for Fiscal Year 2020 to provide for a gun buy-back program, from available fund balance:
