NAMING THE NORTH DOMINGO BACA MULTIGENERATIONAL CENTER GYMNASIUM AND INDOOR TRACK THE “BRAD WINTER GYMNASIUM”.
WHEREAS, the District Four Coalition of Neighborhood Associations voted unanimously on May 15th 2019, with 22 neighborhood association presidents present, to name the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center Gymnasium, set to open April of 2020, the “Brad Winter Gymnasium”; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Brad Winter has dedicated his life to making the lives of others better, and has been a longtime public servant in Albuquerque, New Mexico, having worked as a career educator for Albuquerque Public Schools for 22 years; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter has served the City of Albuquerque and District Four for 20 years, from 1999 to 2019 as a City Councilor, making him the longest seated City Councilor in Albuquerque; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter has also stepped up in times of need to serve Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico as the interim Superintendent of the Albuquerque Public School District and Secretary of State; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter has worked tirelessly to improve the community with projects, including Paseo del Norte/ I-25 Interchange improvements, the construction of North Domingo Baca Park, and improvements to Cherry Hills Library; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter is a lifelong accomplished athlete, having competed in numerous pole vaulting competitions, including the 2019 National Senior Games, hosted in Albuquerque, and having qualified as an All American Athlete in 1971 and 1972; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter is a National Record Holder for Junior College Pole Vaulting, and qualified for the Olympic trials at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter competed in the New Mexico Senior Olympics and National Senior games and won a silver medal in 2017 for the 65-69 age group for pole vaulting; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter was instrumental in the development of the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center; and
WHEREAS, Councilor Winter worked tirelessly to secure the funding for the construction of the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center; and
WHEREAS, the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center is the busiest center in the City, and when Phase III of construction is completed, will be an even bigger asset to the City of Albuquerque.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:
Section 1. The North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center Gymnasium shall be named the “Brad Winter Gymnasium.”
