RENAMING THE PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS CROSSING GIBSON BLVD SE BETWEEN CARLISLE BLVD SE AND AMHERST DR SE, AS THE MARSHALL KOVITZ OVERPASS IN HONOR OF MARSHALL KOVITZ’S MANY CONTRIBUTIONS AND DEDICATION TO THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE.

WHEREAS, Marshall Kovitz rode his bicycle to Albuquerque in the 1970’s from his Boston-area roots, fell in love with the city, and never left again; and

WHEREAS, Marshall was a strong proponent of the cooperative model, who started a bicycle cooperative at the corner of Girard and Central and was a Founding Owner and active Board Member of La Montañita Co-Op for over forty years, until his death; and

WHEREAS, Marshall assisted in developing other community institutions such as the Harwood Art Center, a creative center for community and the arts; and

WHEREAS, Marshall studied Albuquerque’s history in order to produce much of the “Trail Writers” information, a guide to Albuquerque’s bike trails accessible on the City of Albuquerque’s website; and

WHEREAS, Marshall was a friend and advocate for Albuquerque’s most needy, working with the homeless at the Albuquerque Opportunity Center.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

Section 1. The existing overpass crossing Gibson Blvd SE between Carlisle Blvd SE and Amherst Dr SE shall be renamed the Marshall Kovitz Overpass in honor of his love for the community and service in promoting cooperative models, establishing community institutions, assisting the homeless, and promoting bicycling safety and culture throughout Albuquerque.
