RENAMING THE COMMUNITY ROOM AT THE SHAWN MCWETHY SOUTHWEST POLICE SUBSTATION, AS THE LOUIS TAFOYA COMMUNITY ROOM IN HONOR OF FORMER WEST MESA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT AND COMMUNITY ADVOCATE, TO RECOGNIZE HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF THE WESTSIDE AND HIS COMMITMENT TO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

WHEREAS, Louis Tafoya and his wife Ruby "Jane" served as Co-Chairs of the Crime Prevention Committee in the Lavaland Vecinos (later-West Mesa) Neighborhood Association. Louis Tafoya served as the President of the West Mesa Neighborhood Association, ran the Weed and Seed Program, served on the Albuquerque Veteran & Military Affairs Advisory Board, Southwest Alliance of Neighborhood Associations, South Valley Coalition, Albuquerque Community Team, Community Action Team, West Central Community Development Group, and Albuquerque Partnership. Mr. Tafoya also proudly served our country for forty years in the U.S. Navy; and

WHEREAS, Louis Tafoya, through all of his community involvement and personal time over several decades, honored and supported our police officers with the annual Police Appreciation Day at the Shawn McWethy Police Substation. He led the organization of the all-day event with other community members to provide a hot meal for all officers on all shifts at the substation.  He also organized one of the largest Westside annual National Night Out Against Crime events every year with the West Mesa Neighborhood Association; and

WHEREAS, Louis Tafoya was a proud father of five children and proud grandfather to ten grandchildren who all supported his commitment to the Albuquerque Police Department and the residents of the Westside; and

WHEREAS, Louis Tafoya worked tirelessly with the elected officials, the Police Department, and the community towards the safety of the Westside; and

WHEREAS, in order to recognize Louis Tafoya’s long and distinguished service to the community and to the Albuquerque Police Department, the City Council with the cooperation of the Albuquerque Police Department and Commander Roger Banez, is pleased to rename the existing Community Room at the Shawn McWethy Police Substation, the Louis Tafoya Community Room.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE:

Section 1. The existing Community Room at the Shawn McWethy Police Substation shall be renamed the Louis Tafoya Community Room in honor of his love for the community and long and distinguished service and commitment to the Albuquerque Police Officers and the Shawn McWethy Southwest Substation on Albuquerque’s Westside.
